The Boer Goat
Origin: The Boer goat is the most popular butcher's goat in Quebec. This very beefy breed is originally from South Africa. Appeared in the 1900s, it was created by the selection and crossbreeding of goats demonstrating the best meat attributes as well as a prolific and rapid growth. Its name comes from the Afrikaans language "Boerbok", meaning: Farmer's goat. She first appeared in Canada in 1993.
Appearance: The Boer goat is characterized by a strong and vigorous appearance. The symmetry and harmony of the parts of the body make it a plump animal. The goat has a marked masculine appearance, generally possessing a goatee and a very powerful forehand, the front part of the body must blend harmoniously with a muscular hindquarters. The female, on the other hand, has a more feminine appearance with a body that expands from front to back, demonstrating good reproductive capacity.
Feature: The Boer goat has a convex profile, with a Roman nose and hanging ears, of sufficient length that lie flat against the head while not harming the eyes. The jaws are strong, even and properly aligned, not being too long or too short. The eyes are large and bright and the forehead is broad. The horns if present should be well spaced, tilting backwards and away from the body so as to allow movement of the head without the horns rubbing the neck when the animal is mature. The inclination of the horns should follow the convex profile of the head.
